The History
Of Alkalol
The Alkalol Company was founded in
1896 by pharmacist James P. Whitters, who developed his original
formula in a small laboratory above the A.J. Barker pharmacy
in Taunton, Massachusetts.
Mr. Whitters started with an ambitious
goal:
To formulate a soothing antiseptic wash that was powerful
enough to treat a variety of sinus and throat ailments, but
did not contain high levels of alcohol, a harsh antibacterial
found in many competing products of the time.
The result was ALKALOL, a soothing alkaline
saline solution that contains only trace amounts of alcohol
(2/100 of 1 percent), but still effectively dissolves mucus
and kills bacteria with a refreshing mix of naturally antiseptic
ingredients, including menthol, eucalyptol, camphor, and
oils of wintergreen, spearmint, pine, and cinnamon.
The Alkalol Company was incorporated
in Massachusetts in 1907 and ALKALOL soon became available
throughout the United States and abroad. Mr. Whitters’ unique
creation quickly gained popularity with nose and throat specialists
searching for a more natural way to treat the symptoms of
sinusitis
and allergies.
ALKALOL has certainly withstood the test
of time. The product you purchase today is essentially the
same as the one first formulated above a small New England
pharmacy over a century ago.
Mr. Whitters passed away in 1937, leaving
the company to his son, James P. Whitters, Jr. Under his
leadership for nearly 70 years, The Alkalol Company was managed
with a steadfast commitment to providing the highest quality
products possible at affordable prices. James P. Whitters,
III assumed control of the company in 2005 and now runs The
Alkalol Company from Boston, Mass. with his children, James
P. Whitters, IV and Catharine (Whitters) Vaughn.
Four generations of the Whitters family
have been directly involved with the formulation, manufacture,
and distribution of ALKALOL. For over a century, The Alkalol
Company has been dedicated to providing the finest products
at fair prices. As we look to the future, that commitment
will continue to be our guiding goal. |
